About Benny Hui

Originally from Hong Kong, Benny Hui has established himself as a soloist and chamber musician in the UK. He has given recitals and chamber concerts across many cities in the UK. In 2006, Benny was invited to give three all Mozart recitals in celebration of the 250thanniversary of Mozart’s birth. Benny is also very keen on mixed media performing arts and he was the musical director for the national tour of Hoo Haah Production Company’s Night Piece – A deconstruction of Chopin Nocturnes. His collaboration with poet David Tait on a performance of Chopin and The Poet was reviewed by Manchester Salon as ‘beautifully played, fluent, gentle, evocative and setting a standard of accomplishment that was sustained throughout the evening’. As a chamber musician, Benny has worked with Chinese cellist Ying-ying Han, they have performed in many venues and their performance of ‘Mu Ge’ (Chinese Folk Song: The Shepherd’s Song) was broadcasted by the BBC.

Following a degree in literature, Benny won The Leeds Opportunity Trust Award to study as a postgraduate with Dame Fanny Waterman. After completing the MMus at Leeds University, Benny embarked on his MPhil at the Royal Northern College of Music researching Chopin Etudes. His study was made possible with the support of the RNCM Governor’s Award and International Student Award. His principal teachers at RNCM were John Gough, Murray McLachlan and Mark Ray (for Piano Duo). As a student, he appeared in the masterclasses with Bernard Roberts, Yonty Solomon, Joan Havill, Alexander Melikov and William Westney.

Benny is currently a piano tutor at the Junior Department at Royal Northern College of Music and has held the position since 2006. He was previously a pianist at the Royal Ballet School and a piano teacher at Yorkshire Young Musician at The Leeds Conservatoire. In recent years, Benny has developed a strong interest in researching growth theories and its application on training of highly gifted young musicians.
